Armagh face huge challenge to remain at the summit.

Armagh 1st XI look towards their biggest test of the season this Saturday as Saintfield come to the Mall in a potentially huge match at the top of the Ulster Bank Division One Section Two table. The two sides that were relegated last summer were certainly favourites to return and looked likely to do so but with Templepatrick having beaten each of the fancied teams it has become very much a three-way race for the title. However, Armagh’s memorable victory earlier in the season at Saintfield puts them in pole position at the top of the table and a repeat victory in this Saturday’s game would take the city side one step closer to promotion. That certainly won’t come easily though with Armagh having an enforced two week break with the weather at Drumaness and Portadown’s cup commitments getting in the way. This Saturday’s match starts at noon.

Colts Through In Cup

Armagh’s Colts Cup team moved into the third round of the NIACUS sponsored Colts Cup after a strong win against Laurelvale at the Mall on Friday night. The visitors from the Village chose to bat first upon winning the toss and started steadily against the bowling of Matthew Brownlee and Harry Doyle, but the bowlers found their rhythm to take a wicket a piece and remove the openers. Armagh’s change bowlers of Michael Hoey, Matthew Steenson and Andrew Hoey then bowled skilful spells of great control to restrict the Vale batsmen as well as picking up wickets steadily, with NCU under 13 star Andrew Hoey particularly impressive with his leg-spin bowling taking two wickets. Laurelvale’s final score of 79 for 6 wickets in their 25 overs looked below par, and so it proved as Armagh would win comfortably. Adam Breakey departed early to a high catch but then Steenson and Doyle were able to build a steady partnership with good shots and intelligent running between the wickets a feature. An attempted run too many proved costly though as Doyle was spectacularly run out by a direct hit from cover. Armagh would have no further setbacks though as Steenson and Michael Hoey comfortably took Armagh to the target to seal an 8 wicket win and safe passage towards the next round where a journey to Carrick awaits.

Armagh battle the elements to beat plucky BISC

Armagh kept their unbeaten run going to remain at the top of Ulster Bank League Section Two after a hard fought seven wicket victory against Belfast International on The Mall. The start of July traditionally sees the onset of noon starts in the NCU, but the steady rainfall around lunchtime meant that a reduced forty over fixture could only start just before 2pm as the teams braved the damp conditions. Full report

Armagh extend winning run

A sluggish Armagh performance was still enough for the city side to overcome local rivals Portadown in a re-arranged 25over encounter on the Mall on Tuesday night. The hard work put in during a run of three matches in four days had clearly caught up with the Armagh team as their fielding and bowling was not to its usual high standard throughout. On what started as a cloudy and drizzly evening, Armagh captain Charu Kulkarni won another toss and had no doubt in inviting Portadown to bat first. Full report
